A Chilling Encounter in the New York Mountains: Hiker Survives Descent From South Dix Mountain

On December 26th, a 46-year-old woman from South Glens Falls experienced a harrowing ordeal while hiking in the Town of North Hudson. Pouring rain and slippery snow made conditions volatile, and the woman unfortunately slipped off the summit of South Dix Mountain, tumbling hundreds of feet down. Desperate to stop the fall, she grabbed onto a tree to prevent going over a vertical cliff face, mentally and emotionally prepared to meet her fate.

Yet, salvation came in the form of a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) ranger, Jamison Martin, who was informed of the accident at 5:30pm. After a long struggle with extreme weather and terrain conditions, the ranger courageously reached the woman at 1:30 in the morning.

“She, quite honestly, thought she was going to die up there,” Ranger Martin shared. “She was cliffed out and was petrified to move in any direction.”

The hiker was provided with the necessary resources to warm up and rehydrate— including food, dry clothing, and hot liquids. Finally, the pair reached the woman’s vehicle by 6:30 in the morning, and the woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The DEC reminded all outdoor adventurers to observe current COVID-19 guidelines, scout conditions ahead of time, and hike with an experienced partner. The crew on-site was grateful that their preparations and response from the ranger were enough to save the hiker from the precarious situation.
